We take about 15 undergraduates a year to read Mathematics, and they are normally taught for an average of about two hours a week by the Fellows, or by research students of the College, in addition to attending the University lecture courses. The College has excellent library facilities for those reading Mathematics, and there is a well-equipped computer room as well as the possibility of connecting your own computer to the University network from your own room. Courses in Mathematics The Cambridge Mathematical Tripos is probably one of the best and most wide-ranging undergraduate mathematics courses at any university in the world. Although it is certainly a demanding course, enthusiasm and determination to meet the challenge of understanding new mathematical concepts count for far more than the amount of material you have covered at school. The structure of the Tripos is designed to accommodate a fairly wide range of different backgrounds. The basic idea is that, in the exams at the end of the first two years, all candidates take the same papers with the exception of those doing Maths with Physics or Maths with Computer Science — for which see below , covering the basic material in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, theoretical physics, probability and statistics which all educated mathematicians need to know.

The Dating Nerd is a shadowy figure whose whereabouts and identifying details remain unknown. What we do know is that he is really, really good at dating. We’ve been dating for three and a half months now, and the feelings she gives me — I know that’s love. I’ve never felt like this about anyone before, and I want to show it to her.

These include a belief in understandable order; an interplay of imagination and rigorous logic; ideals of honesty and openness; the critical importance of peer criticism; the value placed on being the first to make a key discovery; being international in scope; and even, with the development of powerful electronic computers, being able to use technology to open up new fields of investigation.

References Generic Radiometric Dating The simplest form of isotopic age computation involves substituting three measurements into an equation of four variables, and solving for the fourth. The equation is the one which describes radioactive decay: The variables in the equation are: Pnow – The quantity of the parent isotope that remains now. This is measured directly. Porig – The quantity of the parent isotope that was originally present.

This is computed from the current quantity of parent isotope plus the accumulated quantity of daughter isotope. Standard values are used, based on direct measurements. Solving the equation for “age,” and incorporating the computation of the original quantity of parent isotope, we get:

As a consequence of the exponential growth of science, most mathematics has developed since the 15th century ce, and it is a historical fact that, from the 15th century to the late 20th century, new developments in mathematics were largely concentrated in Europe and North America.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a canonized saint in the Catholic Church who, per Christian tradition, was martyred around in Alexandria, Egypt. Of course, the Church of the first Millennium was undivided. There are no surviving primary sources attesting to her existence, but the fact that her memory, and the stories about her, have been kept alive – and handed down in the tradition – certainly confirm her existence, and her life of heroic virtue and holiness.

The young saint was born around in Alexandria, Egypt. At that time, Alexandria was one of the finest cities in the world, and a center of learning and culture as well as faith. Christian tradition states she was of noble birth, possibly a princess. As a member of the nobility, she was also educated and was an avid scholar. Around the age of fourteen, she experienced a moving vision of Mary and the infant Jesus, and she decided to become a Christian. Although she was a teenager, she was very intelligent and gifted.

MATH In , when Life magazine asked if Jackson Pollock was “the greatest living painter in the United States,” the resulting outcry voiced nearly half a century of popular frustration with abstract art. Some said their splatter boards were better than Pollock’s work. Others said that a trained chimpanzee could do just as well.

For some people, and not only professional mathematicians, the essence of mathematics lies in its beauty and its intellectual challenge. For others, including many scientists and engineers, the chief value of mathematics is how it applies to their own work. Because mathematics plays such a central role in modern culture, some basic understanding of the nature of mathematics is requisite for scientific literacy.

To achieve this, students need to perceive mathematics as part of the scientific endeavor, comprehend the nature of mathematical thinking, and become familiar with key mathematical ideas and skills. This chapter focuses on mathematics as part of the scientific endeavor and then on mathematics as a process, or way of thinking.

Recommendations related to mathematical ideas are presented in Chapter 9, The Mathematical World, and those on mathematical skills are included in Chapter 12, Habits of Mind. As a theoretical discipline, mathematics explores the possible relationships among abstractions without concern for whether those abstractions have counterparts in the real world. The abstractions can be anything from strings of numbers to geometric figures to sets of equations.

In addressing, say, “Does the interval between prime numbers form a pattern? In deriving, for instance, an expression for the change in the surface area of any regular solid as its volume approaches zero, mathematicians have no interest in any correspondence between geometric solids and physical objects in the real world. A central line of investigation in theoretical mathematics is identifying in each field of study a small set of basic ideas and rules from which all other interesting ideas and rules in that field can be logically deduced.

Mathematicians, like other scientists, are particularly pleased when previously unrelated parts of mathematics are found to be derivable from one another, or from some more general theory. Part of the sense of beauty that many people have perceived in mathematics lies not in finding the greatest elaborateness or complexity but on the contrary, in finding the greatest economy and simplicity of representation and proof.

Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient science still in practice today An ancient traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda “the science of life” , originated in India approximately years ago and may have developed out of Vedic medicine. According to Indian belief, the original Ayurveda text was revealed by the god Brahma , the Hindu god of creation, and was written between and BCE. Together, the texts are known as the Brddhatrayee, or ancient triad.

As with gain or loss of P, in the general case it is highly unlikely that the result will be an isochron with colinear data points:

Down to Earth Surface conditions of the planets Venus and Mars are compared with those of Earth, and scenes of Earth’s living landscapes lead into a discussion of how unique Earth truly is. Major topics addressed in the series, including plate tectonics, natural resources, seismology, and erosion, are introduced in this program. However, this notion changed dramatically over time, especially after the invention of the telescope.

This program traces the development of astronomical theory with discussions of the discoveries of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton. Unique characteristics of Earth are also discussed. This program introduces the topic of geophysics, exploring methods of studying what lies beneath Earth’s surface. Geophysicists use seismic wave studies, variations in temperature, magnetic fields, gravity, and computer simulations to create models of deep structures.

Bernhard Riemann Publication data: Annals of Mathematics, FAC, as it is usually called, was foundational for the use of sheaves in algebraic geometry, extending beyond the case of complex manifolds. For example, the long exact sequence in sheaf cohomology allows one to show that some surjective maps of sheaves induce surjective maps on sections; specifically, these are the maps whose kernel as a sheaf has a vanishing first cohomology group. The dimension of a vector space of sections of a coherent sheaf is finite, in projective geometry , and such dimensions include many discrete invariants of varieties, for example Hodge numbers.

Jean-Pierre Serre In mathematics , algebraic geometry and analytic geometry are closely related subjects, where analytic geometry is the theory of complex manifolds and the more general analytic spaces defined locally by the vanishing of analytic functions of several complex variables. A mathematical theory of the relationship between the two was put in place during the early part of the s, as part of the business of laying the foundations of algebraic geometry to include, for example, techniques from Hodge theory.

Mathematics of the Parthenon by Liliana Usvat With the exception of the Great Pyramid in Egypt, the Parthenon of Athens has probably received more attention from archaeologists, historians, architects, painters and poets than any other structure on earth. Built by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates under the supervision of the sculptor Phidias, the temple is generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order, the simplest of the three classical Greek architectural styles.

The ancient Greeks assigned various attributes to the Platonic solids and to certain geometrically-derived ratios, investing them with “meaning. Thus a building dedicated to a god-king might bear traces of cubic geometry, while one dedicated to a heavenly god might have been constructed using Golden Section proportions. It was said to be the first section in which the One became many. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered the culmination of the development of the Doric order.

Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art.

Mozi book Mohism is best known for the concepts of “impartial care” Chinese: This is often translated and popularized as “Universal Love”, which is misleading as Mozi believed that the essential problem of human ethics was an excess of partiality in compassion, not a deficit in compassion as such. His aim was to re-evaluate behaviour, not emotions or attitudes.

Like Confucians, they hired out their services not only for gain, but also in order to realize their own ethical ideals. This political structure consisted of a network of local units in all the major kingdoms of China at the time, made up of elements from both the scholarly and working classes.

Purpose and History of the Parthenon Long before the construction of the Parthenon the site had been a sacred place of other cultures.
